Amsterdam is renowned as one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world, and its reputation continues to grow. This installation takes inspiration from key bicycle safety features—headlights, taillights, front reflectors, and rear reflectors. The Mr. J.J. van der Veldebrug was chosen for its pedestrian-focused architecture and its natural division into lanes, reinforcing the flow of movement.
In cycling culture in Amsterdam, along with many cities around the world, the right lane is for riders moving forward, while the left lane is for those traveling in the opposite direction. This installation reflects that experience. Cyclists in the right lane typically see the backs of riders ahead of them, with red taillights and rear reflectors—so the right side of the bridge features these elements. At the same time, they also see the white headlights and front reflectors of oncoming cyclists in the left lane, which are mirrored on the left side of the bridge.
By carefully positioning the lights and reflectors, the installation ensures visibility from both walking and cycling perspectives coming in any direction. During the day, the reflectors create dynamic visual interactions, making the bridge an engaging space at all hours.
